Saint Paul’s Neighborhoods

Downtown Saint Paul

Downtown Saint Paul is in the midst of an exciting renaissance with the addition of new restaurants, shopping and attractions. Explore fascinating museums like the Minnesota History Center, the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Minnesota Museum of American Art and the Minnesota Children’s Museum. Take in professional hockey as the Minnesota Wild make history at the Xcel Energy Center or enjoy a show at various theatrical venues.

Lowertown

Lowertown’s Union Depot served as the center of America’s railroad system built by James J. Hill. Today, visit the Union Depot for dining in a historic setting. Also in Lowertown, visit the studios of musical and fine artists who have chosen to live and work there. Walk through Mears Park, with its rippling creek and urban forest or stroll down to Lambert’s Landing to watch the paddlewheels steam by on the Mississippi River.

Grand Avenue

The Grand Avenue area is one of Saint Paul’s most popular shopping and dining neighborhoods. It features unique shops, art galleries and bookstores, as well as a wide variety of ethnic restaurants. Grand Avenue is an upbeat, active neighborhood shopping area that visitors enjoy year-round. It parallels the famed Summit Avenue, located one block north.

Summit Avenue and Cathedral Hill

Spectacular homes, churches and universities line Summit Avenue. Along America’s longest uninterrupted stretch of Victorian homes, see the former homes of authors F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sinclair Lewis; and the mansions of railroad baron James J. Hill and Minnesota’s governor. The east end of the avenue is home to the Cathedral of Saint Paul, while the west end boasts a scenic overlook of the Mississippi River.

Selby-Dale Area

Selby Avenue is located just north of Summit Avenue and is home to award-winning restaurants, clothing shops, spas and salons, and a range of cultural venues. It is a wonderful place to enjoy a warm neighborhood feel. Local businesses are owned and operated by people who live and work in the neighborhood.

District del Sol

Just across the river from downtown Saint Paul is District del Sol. This Hispanic area features a variety of charming Mexican restaurants, Latino shops, specialty foods and colorful public artwork. Each May, thousands gather for Minnesota’s largest outdoor Hispanic festival – Cinco de Mayo!

University Avenue

Once the main road between Saint Paul and Minneapolis, University Avenue is now home to a growing Southeast Asian community. Experience art, food and the culture of this fascinating area.

East Side

Saint Paul’s East Side has an eclectic mix of nationalities, neighborhoods and charming parks. Visitors enjoy the wide variety of shops, restaurants, pubs, and nightspots. The East Side is also a popular site for antique shopping.

West Seventh Street

This area has flourished as Xcel Energy Center draws people to events. Restaurants, pubs, antique stores and historical attractions are found within blocks of the arena.
